Requirements and Fees
Both applicants must appear together in person. Each needs a valid government-issued photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign the application at the same time. The fee is $60 in person or $70 by mail. No blood test needed. No residency requirement. If either applicant was divorced within the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage.
After the ceremony, order a certified copy: $30 for the first, $25 for each additional at the same time. Order through VitalChek or in person at either HAVRS office. Marriage commissioner appointments are $25 at the Boney Courthouse in Anchorage at 825 W 4th Avenue.
Waiting Period and Validity
The mandatory 3-day waiting period under AS 25.05.031 begins when the license is issued. The license is valid for 90 days. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to HAVRS within seven days. See the Alaska Court System marriage FAQ for details on the full process including commissioner appointments.
Certified Copies and Historical Records
HAVRS holds all Alaska marriage records from 1913 forward. Records are restricted for 50 years under Alaska Stat. 18.50.270. After the 50-year period, records become public. Before that, eligible requesters include parties to the marriage, their parents, adult children, siblings, and legal representatives. Order certified copies at the Anchorage HAVRS office in person, through VitalChek online, or by mailing a request to the Juneau HAVRS office. Include the full names of both parties, the marriage date, and the ceremony location. Cost is $30 for the first certified copy and $25 for each additional copy in the same order. Heirloom certificates are $65 for the first and $60 each after that. Eagle River residents have the advantage of being close to the Anchorage HAVRS office for in-person requests, which are typically processed the same day.
Mail-In Application Option
Eagle River residents who cannot visit the Anchorage HAVRS office in person can use the mail-in process. Download the application form from the HAVRS website or call (907) 269-0991 to request one by mail. Both applicants must complete and sign the application together in front of a notary. Send the completed form with a $70 check or money order to the Juneau HAVRS office. The license will be mailed back to you after processing. The 3-day waiting period starts from the issue date printed on the license. For most Eagle River residents, the short drive to the Anchorage HAVRS office is faster than the mail route, but both options are valid.
