Requirements and Fees
Both applicants must appear together in person with valid government-issued photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign the application at the same time. The fee is $60 in person or $70 by mail. No blood test needed. No residency requirement. If either applicant was divorced within the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage.
After the ceremony, order a certified copy: $30 for the first, $25 for each additional. Heirloom certificates: $65 for the first, $60 for each additional. Order at this office, online through VitalChek, or by mail. Juneau's HAVRS office holds copies of all Alaska vital records.
Juneau Superior Court
The Juneau Superior Court at 123 4th Street handles First Judicial District civil and criminal matters and marriage commissioner appointments. Any person 18 or older can be appointed as a commissioner for $25. The Alaska Court System marriage FAQ covers the full commissioner appointment process.
Waiting Period and Validity
The 3-day waiting period under AS 25.05.031 starts when the license is issued. Day of issuance does not count as day one. The license is valid for 90 days. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to HAVRS within seven days. Because this office is in Juneau, returning the license is straightforward for local couples.
Certified Copies and Historical Records
Because the Juneau HAVRS office is the primary vital records repository for all of Alaska, all marriage records are held here. Records from 1913 onward are in the state system. Records are confidential for 50 years under Alaska Stat. 18.50.270. After 50 years, they are publicly accessible. Before the cutoff, certified copies can be requested by parties to the marriage, their parents, adult children, siblings, or legal representatives. Order in person at the Juneau HAVRS office at 5441 Commercial Blvd, through VitalChek online, or by mail. For in-person orders at the Juneau office, bring a valid photo ID and payment. Processing is typically same-day for in-person requests. The fee is $30 for the first certified copy and $25 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. Heirloom certificates, suitable for framing, are $65 for the first. Call (907) 465-3391 for questions about records access or order status.
