How to Get a Marriage License in Chugach Census Area

Chugach Census Area is part of Alaska's unorganized borough. There is no local county clerk or borough office to issue marriage licenses. All marriage licenses in Alaska come from the state. The Alaska Department of Health, through its Health Analytics and Vital Records Section (HAVRS), handles every marriage license application in the state. Residents in this area most often use the Valdez District Court as their local access point. The court falls under the Third Judicial District. Staff there can assist with questions and point you to the right forms.

Both people who plan to marry must appear together at the same time. You each need a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, state ID, or passport. Under Alaska Statute AS 25.05.021, both parties must be sworn in before a licensing officer or notary and sign the application together. You cannot send someone else in your place. The license fee is $60 when applying in person. If you mail in your application, add $10 for shipping, bringing the total to $70.

If either applicant was divorced within the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree. The licensing officer must review it before issuing the license. This rule applies statewide with no exceptions.

Note: Alaska has no residency requirement. You do not need to live in Chugach Census Area to get a marriage license here. Both parties simply need to appear in person together.

The 3-Day Waiting Period

Alaska law requires a three-day waiting period between when the license is issued and when you can use it for a ceremony. This comes from AS 25.05.031. There are no exceptions. The day you receive the license does not count as day one. Your ceremony can take place on day four or later.

The license stays valid for 90 days after issuance. If you do not marry within that window, it expires and you must apply and pay again. No renewal is available. Most couples in this area schedule the ceremony two to four weeks after applying, which gives a comfortable buffer.

After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to HAVRS within seven days. That step is what officially records your marriage with the state. A late return can delay your marriage certificate, which you will need for name changes and legal purposes.

Getting Your Marriage Certificate

After the ceremony, the officiant signs the license and returns it to HAVRS within seven days. Once HAVRS registers the marriage, you can order a certified copy. This is the document you need for name changes at the Social Security Administration, DMV, and other agencies. It is not the same as the license.

The first certified copy costs $30. Each additional copy ordered at the same time is $25. A decorative heirloom certificate is also available: $65 for the first copy, $60 for each additional. The heirloom version looks nice but is not accepted for legal purposes. Order online through VitalChek, in person at either HAVRS office, or by mail to Juneau.

Alaska marriage records are confidential for 50 years from the date of the event. After that period, they become part of the public record. If you are looking for historical marriage records from the Chugach region, the Alaska State Archives holds territorial-era documents dating back to the 1890s. The FamilySearch Alaska Vital Records collection has digitized over 1.1 million Alaska documents and is a good starting point for genealogical research.
