How to Get a Marriage License in Kodiak Island Borough

All marriage licenses in Alaska are issued by the state through HAVRS. The Kodiak District Court at 204 Mission Road is the primary local resource for Kodiak Island Borough residents. Kodiak is in the Third Judicial District. The island is accessible by ferry and air from Anchorage. For most couples, applying through the local courthouse process or mailing the application to the Anchorage or Juneau HAVRS office are the two main options.

Both applicants must appear together at the same time. Each needs a valid government-issued photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign the application in person. The fee is $60 in person or $70 by mail. No blood test required. No residency requirement applies.

If either applicant was divorced within the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the final divorce decree. This must be reviewed before the license is issued.

Kodiak District Court

The Kodiak District Court handles civil and criminal matters for the borough and assists with marriage commissioner appointments. Any person 18 or older can be appointed as a commissioner for $25 under AS 25.05.261. This is a one-time appointment that lets them perform one ceremony.
