Requirements and Fees

All marriage licenses in Alaska come from the state through HAVRS. Both applicants must appear together with valid photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign at the same time. Fee: $60 in person, $70 by mail. No blood test. No residency requirement. If either was divorced in the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage.

The Anchorage HAVRS office at 3901 Old Seward Hwy Ste 101 (907-269-0991) is about 35 to 40 miles from Big Lake via the Parks Highway. Big Lake residents often find it easier to drive to the Anchorage HAVRS office in person rather than using the mail process. In-person visits cost $60 and allow both applicants to complete the application together under one trip. The mail-in process to the Juneau HAVRS office costs $70 and requires more lead time.

After the ceremony, order a certified copy: $30 for the first, $25 for each additional. Order through VitalChek or at the Anchorage HAVRS office. Heirloom certificates are available for $65 for the first and $60 for each additional.

Waiting Period and Validity

The 3-day waiting period under AS 25.05.031 begins when the license is issued. It cannot be waived. The license stays valid for 90 days. If you apply in person at the Anchorage HAVRS office, the 3-day clock starts that day. If you apply by mail, the clock starts from the date HAVRS prints on the license, not the day it arrives in your mailbox. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to HAVRS within seven days.

Who Can Perform the Ceremony

Several categories of people can legally marry couples in Alaska. These include ordained or licensed clergy, judges, magistrates, and justices of the peace. The marriage commissioner process at the Palmer Superior Court is also available for $25. This lets any Alaskan or even an out-of-state visitor get authorized to perform one wedding ceremony in the state.

Big Lake is a popular destination for outdoor weddings. Couples sometimes choose to have ceremonies at private properties, on the lake, or at campgrounds. Alaska law does not restrict where a ceremony can take place, as long as a qualified officiant is present and the license is properly completed and returned to HAVRS within seven days of the ceremony.

Certified Copies and Records

HAVRS keeps all Alaska marriage records from 1913 onward. Records are restricted for 50 years after the event under Alaska Stat. 18.50.270. After that, they become available to the public. To order a certified copy of a recent record, the requester must be a party to the marriage or an eligible relative.

Order certified copies through VitalChek or by mail to HAVRS. Include the names of both parties, the marriage date, and where the ceremony took place. The fee is $30 for the first copy and $25 for each additional copy in the same order. You can also get copies in person at the Anchorage HAVRS office during business hours, which is convenient for Big Lake residents given the relatively short drive.
