Palmer Superior Court

Knik-Fairview is part of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, which falls under the Third Judicial District. The Palmer Superior Court at 435 S Denali Street is the main courthouse for the borough and handles civil and criminal matters. From Knik-Fairview, Palmer is roughly 10 to 15 miles east via the Palmer-Wasilla Highway. The Palmer Superior Court assists with marriage commissioner appointments and can answer general questions about Alaska marriage law.

Under AS 25.05.261, any person 18 or older can pay $25 to the Palmer Superior Court to become a marriage commissioner for one ceremony. This applies to any ceremony in Alaska, not just in the Mat-Su area. There is no residency requirement for commissioners, and the appointment can be granted to out-of-state visitors as well, as long as they appear at the court in person.

Requirements and Fees

All marriage licenses in Alaska come from the state through HAVRS. Both applicants must appear together with valid photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign at the same time. Fee: $60 in person, $70 by mail. No blood test. No residency requirement. If either was divorced in the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage.

The Anchorage HAVRS walk-in office at 3901 Old Seward Hwy Ste 101 (907-269-0991) is roughly 35 to 45 miles from Knik-Fairview via the Glenn Highway south. This is the most direct way to apply in person without mailing. The in-person fee is $60. Both applicants must be present at HAVRS at the same time. If you prefer mail, send the application to the Juneau HAVRS office with the $70 fee and expect delivery in both directions to add at least a week to your timeline.

After the ceremony, order a certified copy: $30 for the first, $25 for each additional. Order through VitalChek or at the Anchorage HAVRS office.

Waiting Period and Validity

The 3-day waiting period under AS 25.05.031 begins the day HAVRS issues the license. It cannot be waived. The license is valid for 90 days. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to HAVRS within seven days. This seven-day return deadline applies regardless of whether the officiant is a clergy member, a judge, or a marriage commissioner.

Who Can Perform the Ceremony

Alaska allows several types of officiants. Ordained or licensed clergy, judges, magistrates, and justices of the peace can all perform ceremonies. The marriage commissioner process is available to any adult, making it easy to have a non-clergy friend or family member officiate. The commissioner pays $25 at the Palmer Superior Court and can then legally perform one wedding ceremony in Alaska.

There are no restrictions on where the ceremony takes place in Alaska. Outdoor weddings at private properties, parks, or recreation areas are common in the Mat-Su area. Check with local parks or land management offices if you plan a ceremony on public land, as some locations may require a permit. The legal requirements are simply that a qualified officiant is present and the license is returned to HAVRS within seven days.

Certified Copies and Records

HAVRS maintains Alaska marriage records from 1913 onward. Records are restricted for 50 years after the event under Alaska Stat. 18.50.270. After that, they're public. Certified copies can be ordered by parties to the marriage, parents, adult children, siblings, or legal representatives before the 50-year period ends.

Request copies through VitalChek online or by mailing a request to HAVRS. Include the names of both parties, the marriage date, and the ceremony location. The fee is $30 for the first certified copy and $25 for each additional. In-person requests at the Anchorage HAVRS office are processed faster and are easy to combine with the license application trip.
