Requirements and Fees

All marriage licenses in Alaska come from the state through HAVRS. Both applicants must appear together with valid photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign at the same time. Fee: $60 in person, $70 by mail. No blood test. No residency requirement. If either was divorced in the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage.

The Anchorage HAVRS office at 3901 Old Seward Hwy Ste 101 (907-269-0991) is about 40 to 50 miles from Meadow Lakes via the Parks Highway south. Applying in person costs $60 and allows both applicants to complete the process in one visit. The mail-in option to the Juneau HAVRS office costs $70. Meadow Lakes is close enough to Anchorage that many couples find the drive practical, especially if they have other business in Anchorage.

After the ceremony, order a certified copy: $30 for the first, $25 for each additional. Order through VitalChek or at the Anchorage HAVRS office.

Waiting Period and Validity

The 3-day waiting period under AS 25.05.031 cannot be waived. It starts the day HAVRS issues the license. The license is valid for 90 days. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to HAVRS within seven days. Keep this deadline in mind when choosing your officiant and make sure they know the return requirement before the ceremony.

Who Can Perform the Ceremony

Alaska allows clergy, judges, magistrates, and justices of the peace to officiate weddings. The marriage commissioner process also lets any adult become a licensed officiant for one ceremony. Couples planning outdoor weddings in the Mat-Su Valley — a common choice given the area's scenery — often use the commissioner option to appoint a close friend.

There's no restriction on ceremony location in Alaska. As long as a qualified officiant is present and the license is returned to HAVRS within seven days, the ceremony is valid wherever you choose to hold it. Parks, private properties, and recreation areas are all acceptable, though public land may require permits from the land management agency in charge of that area.

Certified Copies and Records

HAVRS holds all Alaska marriage records back to 1913. Records are confidential for 50 years under Alaska Stat. 18.50.270. After that, they're available to the public. Before the 50-year cutoff, only the parties to the marriage, parents, adult children, or legal representatives can request certified copies.

Order copies through VitalChek or by mailing a written request to HAVRS. Include both parties' names, the marriage date, and the location of the ceremony. The fee is $30 for the first certified copy and $25 for each additional copy in the same order. Heirloom certificates are available for $65 for the first and $60 each after that. Processing times are faster for in-person requests at the Anchorage HAVRS office.
