Under AS 25.05.261, any person 18 or older can become a marriage commissioner by paying $25 at the Palmer Superior Court. The appointment covers one ceremony held anywhere in Alaska. This is a convenient option for couples who want someone specific to officiate, whether that's a friend, colleague, or family member. Requirements and Fees
All marriage licenses in Alaska come from the state through HAVRS. Both applicants must appear together with valid photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign at the same time. Fee: $60 in person, $70 by mail. No blood test. No residency requirement. If either was divorced in the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage.
The Anchorage HAVRS walk-in office is at 3901 Old Seward Hwy Ste 101 (907-269-0991). Tanaina is about 30 to 40 miles from Anchorage via the Parks Highway south and then the Glenn Highway. This is one of the closer Mat-Su communities to the Anchorage HAVRS office, making an in-person visit fairly practical. The in-person fee is $60. Mail-in applications to the Juneau HAVRS office cost $70 and require more time. Both applicants must sign the application whether applying in person or by mail.
After the ceremony, order a certified copy: $30 for the first, $25 for each additional. Order through VitalChek or at the Anchorage HAVRS office.
Waiting Period and Validity
The 3-day waiting period under AS 25.05.031 starts the day HAVRS issues the license. It cannot be shortened or waived. The license is valid for 90 days. After the ceremony, the officiant has seven days to return the signed license to HAVRS. Missing this deadline can complicate the official recording of the marriage, so make sure your officiant is aware of this requirement.
Who Can Perform the Ceremony
Alaska law allows several types of officiants. Ordained or licensed ministers of any faith, judges, magistrates, and justices of the peace all have authority to perform marriage ceremonies. The marriage commissioner route at the Palmer Superior Court is available for anyone who doesn't fit those categories.
The Mat-Su area is a popular setting for outdoor weddings. Tanaina and surrounding areas have parks, private properties, and scenic spots along the Parks Highway corridor. Ceremonies can take place anywhere in Alaska. If you plan to use a specific park or public area, contact the Alaska Department of Natural Resources or local land manager to check if a special use permit is needed for a ceremony gathering.
Certified Copies and Records
HAVRS stores Alaska marriage records from 1913 onward. Records are restricted for 50 years from the event date under Alaska Stat. 18.50.270. After that, they're public. Eligible requesters before the 50-year mark include the parties to the marriage, parents, adult children, siblings, and legal representatives.
To get a certified copy, order through VitalChek online or mail a request to HAVRS with both parties' names, the marriage date, and the ceremony location. Cost is $30 for the first copy and $25 for each additional copy in the same order. You can also request in person at the Anchorage HAVRS office during business hours. Heirloom certificates, suitable for framing, are available for $65 for the first copy.
