Requirements and Fees

All marriage licenses in Alaska come from the state through HAVRS. Both applicants must appear together with valid photo ID. Under AS 25.05.021, both must be sworn in and sign at the same time. Fee: $60 in person, $70 by mail. No blood test. No residency requirement. If either was divorced in the past 60 days, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree. Alaska does not recognize common law marriage.

The nearest walk-in HAVRS office is in Anchorage at 3901 Old Seward Hwy Ste 101 (907-269-0991). Kalifornsky is about 155 miles south of Anchorage via the Sterling and Seward highways. Some couples drive up to apply in person, especially if they want to handle everything in one visit. Others use the mail-in process to the Juneau HAVRS office, which costs $70. Either way, the 3-day waiting period begins once HAVRS issues the license.

After the ceremony, order a certified copy: $30 for the first, $25 for each additional. Order through VitalChek or at the Anchorage HAVRS office.

Waiting Period and Validity

The mandatory 3-day waiting period under AS 25.05.031 starts from the date HAVRS issues the license. No waiver is available. The license is valid for 90 days. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the signed license to HAVRS within seven days. Officiants who miss this deadline can face issues with record filing, so it's worth reminding your officiant of this requirement before the ceremony.

Certified Copies and Records

HAVRS keeps all Alaska marriage records from 1913 onward. Records are restricted for 50 years under Alaska Stat. 18.50.270. After 50 years, they become available to the public. Certified copies can be ordered by the parties to the marriage, parents, adult children, or legal representatives before the 50-year mark.

To order a certified copy, use VitalChek online or mail a request to HAVRS with the names of both parties, the marriage date, and the ceremony location. The fee is $30 for the first copy and $25 for each additional copy. In-person requests at the Anchorage HAVRS office are faster than mail. Call (907) 269-0991 for questions about specific records or order processing.
